An aerial hoop is only one part of an aerial apparatus system. It is equally important to set up the rigging correctly: choosing the appropriate attachment method, type of suspension, and length.

What determines the rigging setup for an aerial hoop?

The main factor is the design of the hoop itself. Aerial hoops can have one or two attachment points, or no built-in attachment point at all.

Rigging an aerial hoop without an attachment point

An aerial hoop without a built-in attachment point is suspended using a round sling. The sling wraps around the upper part of the hoop and is secured with a choke hitch, without requiring an additional attachment point on the apparatus itself.

This setup has another advantage: the performer can interact not only with the hoop but also with the sling. If the sling is long enough, it can be used for additional tricks and movements:

  • holding onto the sling;
  • climbing;
  • creating loops;
  • transitioning from the hoop to the rigging;
  • performing elements above the hoop.

In this case, a long sling is not only part of the rigging system, but can also serve as an additional working element.

Rigging an aerial hoop with one attachment point

An aerial hoop with a single top attachment point can be suspended using either a sling or a rope.

sling is a good choice when the performer plans to interact with the rigging during tricks. Its wider, softer surface is generally more comfortable to grip.

rope is a practical option when it is mainly needed to connect the hoop to the overhead attachment point. This setup can be more compact and visually neat, especially when the performer does not plan to actively interact with the rigging.

A rope can also be used for grips, but it is generally less comfortable than a sling for prolonged holds: it may be stiffer, thinner, and less comfortable to hold.

For a single-point hoop, the rope is typically connected to the hoop using a carabiner.

So, the choice between a rope and a sling depends not only on the hoop design, but also on how the performer plans to use the rigging.

Rigging an aerial hoop with two attachment points

An aerial hoop with two attachment points allows the performer to do some tricks that are different from those possible on a single-point hoop.

A loop can be installed between the two attachment points and used for various elements. If the performer grips the upper part of the hoop between the attachment points, the hoop can tilt to one side. In this position, the lower part of the hoop rises, allowing for additional trick variations.

The distance between the attachment points affects how the hoop moves in this position. The wider the points are spaced, the more the position of the hoop can change. This is therefore an important consideration when choosing or designing a hoop.

A single sling is not a full substitute for a branched rigging system on a two-point hoop, since the configuration needs to match the design of the apparatus.

Short rigging for low ceilings

When ceiling height is limited, using a long sling or rope is not always practical. In some cases, the hoop can be connected to the overhead attachment point using a compact setup:

carabiner — swivel — carabiner.

Depending on the design of the swivel and the attachment points, it may sometimes be possible to reduce the number of connecting components. Some swivel models can connect directly to an overhead attachment point or to the hoop.

This can save valuable height and is particularly useful:

  • for home training;
  • in studios with low ceilings;
  • when the hoop needs to be positioned as high as possible;
  • when the performer does not plan to interact with the rigging.

If the distance between the hoop and the overhead attachment point is around 50 cm (19,7 in), for example, either a short rope or a short sling can be used. However, it may be difficult to perform additional elements on a very short sling, so a short rope can often be the more practical option.

Aerial hoop height and rigging length

The ideal height of an aerial hoop depends on the performer's experience, the elements they plan to perform, the ceiling height, and the overall length of the rigging system.

How high should an aerial hoop be installed?

For basic training, the hoop is often installed approximately at the performer's eye level. This makes it easier to get into the hoop, practice basic elements, and work without being too far above the floor.

For more advanced work, the hoop is generally installed higher. When standing with one arm fully extended overhead, there may be a small gap between the hand and the hoop, so the performer needs to jump slightly or use a low platform to reach it. This height provides more space for movements underneath and inside the hoop.

The intended routine should also be taken into account. Some elements are performed upside down, with the performer's body extending downward from the hoop. In these positions, there must be enough clearance from the floor to prevent the performer from making contact with it.

In a low-ceiling space, the hoop should be positioned as high as the available structure and the safe performance of the planned elements allow.

What counts toward the rigging length?

When calculating the height, it is important to consider not only the length of the rope or sling but also all other components of the system. Depending on the setup, these may include:

  • an upper carabiner;
  • a swivel;
  • a lower carabiner;
  • a sling or rope;
  • the aerial hoop itself.

The dimensions of these components vary by model. For example, a carabiner or swivel may be around 10 cm (3,9 in) long. Before calculating the required length, check the actual dimensions of all components that will be used.

How to calculate the required sling length

As a general guide, you can use the following calculation:

Height of the attachment point − desired height of the bottom of the hoop − hoop diameter − length of connecting components = required sling length.

First determine the height at which the bottom of the hoop should be positioned. Then account for the hoop diameter and the length of the carabiners, swivel, and other components. The remaining distance to the overhead attachment point is the approximate required length of the sling or rope.

The exact calculation depends on the specific hoop design and the dimensions of the components being used.

What else should be considered?

When determining the height, make sure there is enough space:

  • above the hoop — for movements and elements performed on top of it;
  • below the hoop — for hangs, inversions, and other movements;
  • around the hoop — for spinning and dynamic movements.

The rigging length should therefore be determined not only by the ceiling height, but also by the performer's height, the hoop diameter, and the specific training or performance routine.

Swivel and aerial hoop rotation

All aerial hoops are designed to rotate, so a swivel is an essential component of any rigging system. It allows the hoop to rotate freely relative to the overhead attachment point and helps prevent the rigging components from twisting.

Ready-made rigging set or individual components?

A rigging system can be assembled from individual components. However, a ready-made rigging set can be more convenient because its components have already been selected for a particular setup.

How to choose an aerial hoop rigging set

Start with the design of the hoop itself.

1. Determine the number of attachment points.

For a hoop without built-in attachment points, a round sling is required. For a single attachment point, either a sling or rope can be used. For two attachment points, an appropriate branched suspension is required.

2. Determine the required length.

Consider the height of the overhead attachment point, the desired height of the hoop, and the dimensions of all connecting components.

3. Decide whether the performer will interact with the rigging.

If so, a long sling is generally more comfortable for grips and additional elements. If the rigging is only needed as a connection, a rope or a compact setup may be more appropriate.

4. Check component compatibility.

All components should be compatible with each other and with the intended method of use.

5. Consider the environment.

A training studio, stage, home setup, or other space may require different rigging lengths and configurations.

A properly selected rigging set helps create a clear and compatible system, but the set itself does not determine whether the installation is safe. The supporting structure, correct installation, condition of all components, and proper use are also essential.

Safety when using an aerial hoop

Before every training session or performance, inspect the aerial hoop, rigging set, carabiners, swivels, rope or sling, and the overhead attachment point.

Make sure that:

  • all connections are correctly installed and secured;
  • carabiners are fully closed and locked;
  • the rope or sling shows no damage, excessive wear, or fraying;
  • carabiners, swivels, and other metal components show no deformation or damage;
  • the overhead attachment point is secure and suitable for the intended load.

The system should also be inspected after each training session or performance. Regular checks help identify fraying, deformation, damage, or other changes that could affect safe use.

If any component appears questionable, do not use it until it has been properly inspected or replaced.

An aerial hoop rigging system requires the same careful attention as the aerial apparatus itself. Regular checks before and after use are a simple habit that helps keep the system in proper condition.
